There are different types of wood used in the production of sculptures, depending on the availability and durability of the wood in each region. The most commonly used are ebony, mahogany, and teak. Ebony is very common in West African countries and is excellent for sculptures because of its density, color (black, dark brown) and natural brilliance. Teak, and mahogany woods are often used for carvings where coloring is required because of their ability to absorb dye.
